We are like the Ikea of the bicycle world and we operate our business around three keywords - quality, reliability, affordability. To do this we are continually and exhaustively meeting with new manufacturers and suppliers, testing samples and constantly working to increase and improve our range of bicycles whilst at the same time remaining affordable for everyone.

Unlike almost any other affordable bicycle brand who have their bikes made in China and India, we have moved production away from here and our bicycles are now made exclusively within Europe, where producers have to meet strict European Commission standards and where every bike is tested to the the most stringent European standards. As we are much nearer to them it also means that can oversee production, keeping a close and personal eye on our bikes. With most of our components coming from Italy and Germany, we are confident about their longevity and reliability too.

As we reach our 6 month birthday, we have started to look back on our recent but humble birth. I have just got off the phone to a prospective customer and it was during my conversation with her that I truly came to realise just how brilliant our new hybrid modern Dutch bikes (£139.99 inc. delivery) are.

As the UK’s first ever exclusively affordable bicycle brand, we have to be very careful about where we have our bikes made, who makes them and how well they make them. To sell to people with a budget, we need to buy with a budget in mind.

Until now, our bikes (along with almost every single bike brand you can name) have been manufactured in the Far East. They have been brilliant too - but we were always conscious of one thing, the distance they need to travel before they reach you. Initially it began with the fact that it was costing us (and subsequently you) a lot to ship them over, and stemming from that was the fact that we were leaving a significant ‘carbon footprint’ behind us. Founder, Freddie Bourne, thought this was actually a bit hypocritical - why sell green transport but knacker the environment in the process? So with a heavy heart we announced to our trusty manufacturers that we were going to look closer to home.

 ALL bikes now in our range will be manufactured within the EU, and thanks to our substantial size and buying power, we have managed to agree prices that mean we can still be the UK’s most affordable bicycle brand.

We at Capital Cycles don’t generally do things by the book. If we did, our bikes would cost twice as much and they would be covered in brash colours and too many gears.

So in accordance with our custom, we just want to help introduce you to the new Hybrid bicycle - The Capital ‘Modern Dutch/Hybrid’ bike range. By all intents and purposes they are the same as a hybrid or city bicycle - they have large qlloy wheels, lightweight steel trekking frames, mudguards and even come with a free carry rack and centre stand. They are purpose built to withstand the onslaught that everyday use gives a bicycle. Only here is where ours are different, and why:

Our bicycles cost a fraction of what any other hybrid/city bike will cost because the Capital Cycles brand is a new and unique bicycle brand. it was created, inspired and launched by one person who wanted to make cycling affordable for everybody. He was not profit driven, but instead angered by the rising cost of living and the extortionate price of fuel and public transport. He put onto paper what he felt a city/commuting bicycle needs, sourced Asian and European manufacturers and got them to build the bikes.

We have been planning our new 2009 series of bikes and where before we were thinking about having just the Classic style bike, we have now decided to INCREASE our range and develop a ‘Modern Dutch’ style bike to suit those who need something lighter, easier and more ‘everday’.

1) The new and upgraded 2009 Capital ‘Modern Dutch’ Ladies bike is going to be available soon and will boast some fantastic features. But most importantly, it is designed completely around being solid, light, handy, reliable and of course - affordable.  It will be fully equipped with full length mudguards, carry rack, side stand, chain cover and so on, and will also be equipped with Shimano 6 speed gear. It will look head-turning beautiful and will cost in the region of £140 - delivered. This is going to be the ULTIMATE everyday city and commuting bike. These bikes are currently still in production and delivery is guaranteed before Christmas.

2) Then we have the bike which has put Capital on the map - the Capital ‘Classic Dutch’ Ladies bike. A blast from the past, with a deep green frame, colour coded apparel, Sturmey Archer 3 speed hub gears, kick down centre stand, brown leather saddle and fully enclosed chain cover. It has the timeless elegance of a Pashley but without the price tag, costing in the region of £180 - delivered. These beauties are also currently in production and delivery will be next Spring.

It is our mission to make cycling affordable for everyone and with this new range of bikes coming in, we are really beginning to make that goal a reality.

The introduction of our large, front wicker bicycle baskets (£25.99 )has been a great success. For almost every Classic Dutch bike sold, a wicker basket follows. They are beautiful, affordable and really simple to attach and remove.

What we want to know is - do you want rear baskets too? If we get a resounding YES from this, we shall make it happen, just give us the word. They will probably cost around the same.
