Everyone wants to 'Sit Up and Beg' – on a bicycle I mean.

Thursday, September 18th, 2008

On occasion, a customer will phone me up to ask about a bike before they buy. One of their first questions, if looking at our Dutch bikes is, “Do i sit upright?” It’s a good question and it is great to be able to say, with absolute authority, “yes.”

Dutch style bikes such as ours give you this remarkable opportunity. They allow you to go through the rigours of cycling, but without losing your dignity or poise. You don’t need to wear spandex and you don’t need to ‘hump’ the bike. ‘Sit Up and Beg’ bicycles are glorious, they represent everything that represents gloriousness. They allow you wear normal clothes without having them shredded into confetti. They allow you cycle above the traffic fumes and bus exhausts. They let you ride with ease and with a straight back.

If this is the style of riding you want, then take a good look at our Modern Dutch Hybrid bikes (£199.95 delivered)!

Thank you

Ladies Dutch/Classic bikes – back in fashion!

Monday, September 8th, 2008

Cult designer label, Chanel, recently introduced onto the market a ladies Dutch bike for £6000.00 – i think that says it all.

We sell both gents and ladies Classic Dutch Bicycles and the good news is that they cost a little less - between £140 and £180. I have to tell you that it is the women’s which sell the most. In fact, they outsell the men’s at a rate of 5:1. No wonder Chanel have tried putting such a high price tag on them. Sales of these stunning bikes have rocketed and i can only begin to imagine what is going to happen to sales over Christmas!

From £150 delivered, this could be the Christmas Present you have been looking for! Every bike has a 12 month guarantee and not only that, but you will always have a real person at the other end of the phone. We don’t use automated services (axcept the answering machine) and we like to get to know our customers.

Not only are these bicycles abslutely beautiful, but they fill a space in the market which for so long has been empty – they are genuinely affordable! Normally a ladies Dutch style bike like the ones we sell will set you back between £300 and £700. These great bikes are either handbuilt in Holland or Germany or in Straford upon Avon and they are absolutely divine. The only part which for some is not so divine is the price tag. We fill that space. While we will never pretend that our bikes are hand made in a stunning town in the Midlands, they are nevertheless extremely well built, reliable and absolutely stunning. They are tested and certified to meet the latest and most sctrict European Standards, they use the same gears as a Pashley and the only work you will need to do when you get it is attach the front wheel, seat, pedals and handlebars!

Why are we so affordable? Most people sell small numbers of goods for a high profit. We believe, very simply, in selling lots of goods for a lower profit per bike. Capital Cycles Ltd exists in order to help people who either cannot afford a bicycle or simply do not want to spend too much. Our bikes are simple, affordable and beautiful – browse our site and see for yourself!

Thanks.

Our Dutch Style Bikes featured in 'This is money' magazine!

Thursday, August 28th, 2008

We learnt today that our Classic Dutch Style bikes (£165 delivered) have been mentioned in the Daily Mail’s ‘Thisismoney’ newsletter. This is of course very pleasing, but what pleases me the most is that the author has clearly understood the ‘why‘ of who, where and why we exist – we are here to make cycling affordable. We have bicycles for people who either a) cannot afford a bike or b) simply do not want to spend upwards of £500. Our bikes are simple, traditional, ecomonical and represent good value for money. While we do not pretend that they carry Pashley quality, they are beautiful, fun and they have been extremely popular.

See what the article says here: http://www.thisismoney.co.uk/home/frame.html?in_page_id=1&in_bottom=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.thisisnotwork.co.uk%2F&ito=1723

Excert: “…the trouble is, these (other) types of bike are so ridiculously expensive that our friends at the bike shop proudly boast that no one buys them. Well, if I’ve still got your attention I’ve found one that costs a mere £165, including free delivery…”

Here is a little tip – these are some of the most affordable Classic Dutch Style bikes you will ever find. For £165 delivered, they are simple, enjoyable and are built and designed to represent the timeless love that these bikes seem to inspire.

At this price they are ideal if perhaps you want to buy one for your partner, daughter or mother, but you’re not quite sure how much it will actually be used.  Classic bikes are often like classic cars – the idea of owning one is great, but the actual useage it gets is another thing. Well, if you think this might be the case for you, spend less and risk less!

The Dutch Bike Craze – We have them right here, right now!

Tuesday, July 29th, 2008

All right - so for anyone with eyes, ears and a general sense of what is cool and what isn’t, i think it is pretty much clear that old school retro Dutch bikes are completely and utterly COOL. In fact, they have never really been more cool. With that old fashioned ‘sit up and beg’ riding position, the fact that one revolution of the giant wheels seems enough to get you across town and the unavoidable truth that like a classic car, people will stop and look – you now own something really special.

Well we have them and we have them taped. Our Classic Dutch Bikes (£165 delivered) are the most affordable Dutch style bike of this spec available and they are right here for you to take. They have brand defining Sturmey Archer 3 speed AWC hub gears, a Sturmey Archer rear coaster brake, giant 28″ steel wheel rims and a stunning brazed steel frame. For the money, you simply can not do better.

However, since we operate of total transparency we also let you know where you could, should you wish, make improvements. These are simple but beautiful bicycles. In this world you get what you pay for and with us you are getting exactly that. These bikes are not rocket ships but they are stunning and provided you are happy to be gentle and careful with the final assembly, they are truly unbeatable. Then, if you wish to spend a few quid, you can use it as a base to upgrade from – see our blog on upgrade ideas.

Whatever happens, just have fun, be careful and take care. If you ever need to ask us anything, simply pick up the phone (0208 2655586) or email me.

Ciao!

Cheap ideas to UPGRADE your Classic Dutch Bike – add value, have fun!

Monday, July 7th, 2008

Our most valuable policy is one of total transparency and honesty. When you buy from us, you know exactly what you are buying. Our bikes are simple, affordable and designed for people buying with a budget.

One of our latest ideas stems from the fact that we represent good value for money. Our Classic Dutch Style Bikes are a fantastic deal at £165 delivered and have been noted for their deep regal colour and eye catching beauty!
HOWEVER - for just a small amount of money, you can build it up to be a greater mahcine and make it worth much more.  Since talking to other professional Dutch Bike shops, we have learnt that it is quite standard for people to buy brand new bikes like ours (which cost the same as a second hand one) and then use it as a base to upgrade it. We already give you so much bike – Sturmey Archer 3 speed gears, a strong brazed frame, brown leather saddle and more. So what’s left? Here are just a few affordable ideas:

  • Upgraded, tougher wheel and crank bearings
  • Larger, tougher front brake pads
  • Kevlar, puncture proof tyres – I personally recommend the Schwalbe Marathon range
  • Replace current bottom bracket axle, chainwheel and cranks (pedal arms) with a modern square taper axle and cranks
  • New foot pedals (current pedals are more aesthetic than functional)
  • Sturmey Archer front Hub brake
  • Alloy wheel rims (current rims are steel)
  • Tighten the spokes (not so much an upgrade as just a quick job - tightening spokes costs about £3 per wheel and makes them far far stronger)
  • Tighten and oil the chain (again, not so much an upgrade as a simple home improvement)

We cannot perform these changes for you, but the good news is that these simple, small things can be bought from most bike shops and done at home. Don’t be mistaken, the bike you receive is still great even if you do none of the above, these are just simple and affordable ways to improve on the bike you already have!

We think this is really exciting. Use us to get your hands on a brand new, untouched Classic, retro Dutch style bike for a great price and then fashion it into the bike of your dreams. This is EASILY the most affordable way to get a new bike of this style and calibre.

Any thoughts, any questions, just give us a call or send us an email.

This is really cool – give it a go!

A Day out on the Classic Dutch Style Bikes

Monday, June 30th, 2008

Last week end was beautiful and the weather was incredibly kind to us and so my girlfriend and i decided we would take the opportunity to road test the Capital Classic Dutch Style bikes. Here is a brief summary of our experience.

It was gone midday before we left home and after we had asjusted the seats to suit our riding positions (i am 5’5″, my girlfriend is 5’7″) we set off over Wandsworth Bridge and up towards Chelsea.
The first comment either of us had to make was how gentle they are to ride. You may not be able to go too fast, but with those enormous 28″ wheels and Sturmey Archer 3 speed gears to help, even the steep Wandsworth Bridge was less of a challenge than i had feared. It was made immediately clear that provided you are not in a rush, these bicycles can get you any where you want, with grace and elegance. The archetypal ‘sit up and beg’ posture you attain further reinforces this and also means that not only are you forced into a relaxing riding position, but this somehow also affects how you feel. You cannot help but feel relaxed and happy.

Finally we made it up through Chelsea and into Knightsbridge (this took about 40 minutes). We stopped at the supermarket to buy lunch and this is where Heidi’s wicker bicycle basket (£25.99 )now found its true purpose. We have chosen to sell large bsakets and i can tell you now, they hold enough. From here we rode up into Hyde Park, found a quiet, shaded spot, set the bikes on their solid kickdown centre stands and started eating.
It was not long before the bikes started to attract a crowd. People passing by were regualrly stopping to look a the bikes. We made them feel free to play with them, get on them and pedal about. They were loved. When i then told them the price (£165 equipped and delivered) they could hardly believe their ears.

We are here to help people who either do not have the funds or do not wish to spend too much money on a bicycle. Our bicycles are more simple than other more expensive brands, but they are are reliable and beautiful.

Have a look around our bike shop and if you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to get in touch.

Have a great week!

TOTALLY STUNNING! – our new Classic Dutch Style bikes

Tuesday, June 24th, 2008

Absolutely sensational. Eye catching. Captivating. Spine tingling.

Our brand new Classic Dutch style bikes are more beautiful than we ever planned for them to be. In fact, they are perfect. Every single part feels weighty with high quality components and hand crafted precision. The drop down centre stand is a small work of art and the hand painted gold lines on the mudguards are breath taking. The deep, deep racing green absorbs the sunlight and the dark glow the frame exudes is hypnotic.

So the catch? You need a spanner, a screwdriver, a pair of flat head pliers and a little knowledge for the gear unit. Even if you need to have the gears done by a shop, you are still securing an extraordinary deal.

Building this bike is all very easy until you get to the front brake and Sturmey Archer gears. Our advice is this: do all the simple things yourself and then take the bike to a shop to do the gears, brakes and a general inspection of the bike. This will cost no more than £35 and is a good idea. Or of course, if you are DIY and bike savvy, you can save this small extra cost.

Either way – you will be very, very happy when you receive your brand new Dutch Bike.
