GROWING FAST – Capital Cycles wins British Airways 2010 Business Grant

Tuesday, February 9th, 2010

Following our company’s application to win a British Airways Business Opportunity Grant, we are delighted and extremely proud to announce that Capital Cycles has won. As a winner, we will be able to take advantage of business travel for a year to help our business grow and thrive.

The judges at British Airways saw the direction we are taking our unique bicycle business in and recognised our massive potential for growth and development. They saw that with this grant we will be able to grow internationally, meet existing and new manufacturers face to face and expand & improve our already growing range of well built, reliable bicycles.

Willie Walsh, British Airways chief executive, said: “The competition attracted an array of very impressive entrants demonstrating real energy and innovative grass-roots enterprise. The 100 winning entries show how the benefits of face-to-face contact with overseas partners go to provide an engine for commercial success.”

In the 2 years we have been trading, we have completely redefined the meaning of reliable and affordable bicycles. We have already started selling our bicycles around the world, from Sidcup to Seattle and from Peckham to Portugal and with this grant we will see this side of our business expanding further and faster. But despite our rapid growth, we are still a deeply personal and service orientated business. If you telephone us today, you will get straight through to a real person, instantly.

The grant includes 12 Club World or Club Europe return flights to anywhere on the British Airways network, 5 containers of shipping space from British Airways World Cargo, 5 Regus businessworld gold memberships and a year’s subscription to The Daily Telegraph. To read more: click here.

Couple take Capital Dutch Cycles to France for cycling holiday

Wednesday, October 7th, 2009

One of our summer customers this year bought a Gents and Ladies Modern Dutch bike, loaded them onto the ferry and took them around Northern France for their holiday. As soon as they returned, they emailed us to tell us.

They were thrilled with their bicycles and sent us this little report:

“ We cycled about 100 miles in total. Well we started by driving to Renne (Brittany) where we stayed for a week then moved up the cannel to Saint malo on the bikes (Its the canall where most of the pic are taken from). From there we were camping and biking from Saint Malo all the way across the emerald coast and the pink granite coast to our final designation at Tregastel-Plage. All in Brittany. There we got a train back to Renne where we had our apartment

Our trip was broken into 3 different stages. The trip started on the 5th Aug till 30th Sept.

The first week we spent a week in Renne and its surroundings.

The next part was our bike ride which took 2 weeks at a very leisurely pace between 12th Aug -30th Aug

The last part was Island hoping / surfing / beach time on the west and south of Brittany, we didn’t take the bikes on this part (it cost alot of money to take your bikes on the ferries and we were tired from the bike ride so we decided not to bother). Our next trip might to Scotland as haven’t really seen much of it.”

We recommend Scotland. It is beautiful, accessible and friendly.

Autumn – why it's the BEST season for cycling

Wednesday, September 2nd, 2009

Here are some of the reasons why we believe Autumn is the best season to make sure you have a bicycle:

  • The temperature is perfect. You won’t get hot and sweaty and neither will your knuckles freeze.
  • It rains very little in Autumn. September and October statistically have some of the least rain.
  • It is the most beautiful season of the year. Imagine you are cycling through a park or woodland, with the leaves starting to fall around you. Bliss.
  • You can get trim, ready for an inevitable winter of over-indulgence and minimal movement.

Personally, we think cycling is the way forward throughout the year, but Aumtumn for us really strikes a chord. It is such a beautiful season and extremely peaceful. To make the most of this season, check out our Modern Dutch Style bikes and you can be on the road tomorrow.

**CYCLE FRIDAY – where it is and how it works**

Friday, August 14th, 2009

For those of us who want to get into cycling to work, help is here.

From 6 different points on the outskirts of central London, London Cycling Campaign stewards will be setting off, guiding anybody who chooses to follow, into the heart of the Capital.

Those 6 points are:
Brixton – Russell Sq 8.00 Outside KFC, Corner of Brixton Road and Coldharbour Lane, Brixton
Finsbury Park – City (St Pauls) 8.00 Finsbury Park Gate, Finsbury Park, Seven Sisters Road, Finsbury Park
Mile End – City (St Pauls) 8.00 Under the Green Bridge near Mile End station, Mile End Road, Mile End
Ravenscourt – Trafalgar sq 8.00 Outside Ravenscourt Park Tube- Ravenscourt Place, Ravenscourt Park
Swiss cottage – Holborn 8.00 Outside Theatre, Eton Avenue at junction with Swiss Cottage Gyratory, Swiss Cottage
Greenwich – City (St Pauls) 8.00 Cutty Sark Gardens, King William Walk, Greenwich

Cycling is a FASTER, CHEAPER and HEALTHIER alternative to any other form of short distance commuting. For example, to cycle at a leisurely pace from Wandsworth to the centre of Mayfair is a 45 minute ride – with stops! Our bicycles are designed for leisurely commuters – check our bikes out here.

As Mayor Boris Johnson said: “Cycle Fridays are a simple way of giving commuters the confidence to get cycling. I’m sure that when they see how much of a healthy and convenient experience it can be, they will be hooked.”

Cycle Friday will be operating every Friday until the 2nd October.

WAYS TO AVOID HAVING YOUR BIKE STOLEN

Tuesday, August 11th, 2009

it is estimated that around half a million bicycles will be stolen this year. Here are a few tips, courtesy of The London Paper, on how to keep your bicycle:

  1. Lock your bicycle up in different places every day. This will put a thief regular to that patch, off .
  2. Fit a shopping basket to the front and/or back. The ‘Mary Poppins’ look doesn’t go down so well on the bicycle black market. For bicycle baskets – click here
  3. Lock your bicycle through the frames and wheels, never just through the crossbar. For cable locks – click here
  4. Loop your lock through as much of the bike as possible. Make sure it is not in contact with the ground – this makes it easier to strike through.
  5. Face the key insert for your lock in towards the bicycle. This will make it much harder for a thief to ‘pick’.

AVOID SWINE FLU – read this

Friday, July 24th, 2009

It seems fairly obvious really, doesn’t it. If you keep away from the places where large crowds of people gather and stand side by side, then you will also be keeping away from germs and viruses.

One sneeze on the Underground could splatter 15 people. If 4 different people sneeze then that’s the entire carriage.
