Friday, April 8th, 2011

Portugal’s illustrious fashion publication MAXIMA MAGAZINE has seen to fit to feature our traditional Dutch bicycles in their magazine this month. They say:

“For those living in London, buying a bicycle is a natural progression. Here is a true culture of cyclists and it is for sport, leisure and lifestyle. The choice of the beautiful machine is important. I am in love with vintage, for months  i have had a vintage bicycle. After extensive searching, i finally found a shop that meets all the requirements; it is called Capital Cycles. It offers 6 different models as well as accessories. In addition to a next day delivery service within the UK, they also deliver to the rest of Europe and around the world. Yes, yes, yes.”

If you are not from the UK and want to buy a bicycle, simply select the correct delivery option at the checkout page.

The two bicycles they have chosen to feature in photos are the Modern Dutch and the Classic Dutch

A letter from the founder – deeply proud of our 2010. Roll on 2011

Friday, December 17th, 2010

Dear everyone,

I am incredibly proud of everyone who has helped us thrive this year and also wish to thank every customer who has come through our online doors. We have sold over 800 bicycles this year to lovely customers and we have enjoyed every call and email we have taken.

Our little business is growing at a lovely, steady, organic rate and we have some wonderful plans for 2011. We are going to increase our range of Dutch and hybrid bicycles and we also hope to introduce an even more effective email response system. At present, we reply to every email within 2 working hours. Our aim next year is to reduce that to 60 minutes and even to have a live online chat option (as well as our direct phone line). When you buy a bicycle from Capital Cycles, we want you to feel as close as possible to us and the bicycle you want.

On top of this, we offer an unrivalled 2 year warranty on all bicycles and a simple, no quibble 7 day return or exchange policy on all bicycles. This year out of the 800 bicycles we sold, 5 were returned. That is approximately a 1000% lower return rate than the average internet purchase return rate. we are thrilled about this.

Finally, if you have any ideas at all about how we can change or improve, call. We love to talk.

Many thanks and all the best for a successful 2011

Our BRAND NEW 2011 Dutch bike collection – OUT NOW!!

Thursday, October 28th, 2010

We are so excited we could literally pop. After months and months of intense work, Kross (of which are the UK’s sole distributor)  have finally launched their 2011 collection. Within it are some of the most beautiful Dutch bikes that we have EVER seen

Dutch Classico

These bicycles are superb. They are extremely high quality, use only the best components possible and yet are still a good £100-£200 less than anything like it on the highstreet. On top of that, your bicycle comes with a full TWO YEAR warranty and when you buy it, you have 7 days to return or exchange it if you are not completely 100% satisfied.

Thanks,

London’s blue cycle highways

Wednesday, July 21st, 2010

The first of the NEW London cycle highways is now open and in action. It will help make cycling safer, easier and indeed quicker. The main benefits of the new highways are:

Direct and continuous – The routes will be clearly marked from start to finish so you’ll have no trouble following them. You’ll also see information along the way about journey time and links to other cycling routes.

Comfortable – They have improved road surfaces along the route so you can pedal more comfortably.

Easy to find – Each highway will have a clear and unique identity.

Safe – Signals, road markings and continuous cycle lanes at junctions will help you keep safe.

This is great news for the London cyclist. Thanks to Boris, London is becoming a truly cycle friendly capital.

London Bicycle Hire Scheme – How it works

Wednesday, February 24th, 2010

Arriving this summer 2010, will be London’s first comprehensive cycle hire scheme. Following on the success of the bicycle hire concept in Paris, Londoners will be able to hire bicycles for a fee. You will be able to pick up a bicycle from any one of 400 stations across London, use it, then drop it off at any station you want.

There are two different fees which every user will have to pay:

1) ACCESS FEE
1 day = £1
7 days = £5
Annual pass = £45 (+ one-off payment of £3 for membership key)

2) USAGE FEE
up to 30 minutes = free
up to 1 hour = £1
up to 1 and a half hours = £4
up to 2 hours = £6
up to 2 and a half hours = £10
up to 3 hours = £15
up to 6 hours = £35
up to 24 hours = £50

PENALTIES
late return = £150
damage = up to £300
non-return = £300

Well, while we are thrilled to see more of an effort to get people on a bicycle, here are our concerns:

  • It is only really economical if you are a cycle hire member (£45/year) and use a bicycle for less than 30 minutes each time. Use it any other way and it will be no cheaper than an Oyster card.
  • What if you use a bicycle for a 30 minute journey and there are no spaces in the docking station at your destination? You will have to find another station, pay for the extra time, park away from your intended destination and probably miss your meeting.
  • London, sadly, is awash with vandalism and theft. What if someone (a non-member) either damages or steals a cycle hire bicycle which you have just used? You will have been the last registered user and you will receive the penalty.

It will be a great way for people to see if cycling is ‘for them’ and if it is, then I strongly recommend you buy your own bicycle.
