3 reasons why the winter time is such a great time to cycle

Monday, January 18th, 2010

People are often under the impression that cycling at this time of year is a bad idea. Well, we want to help dispell that idea and give you a few simple reasons why cycling at this time of year is so great

  • whilst it may be cold, it almost never rains and it is rain which is unpleasant. Plus, with the cold, once you are exercising you will not feel it. Instead, what you have is the feel of pure, fresh, clean air.
  • cycling/exercising in the winter time is more rewarding and productive than in the summer time. Your body is using more enegry and is developing a stronger immune system as well.
  • By being on your own form of transport, you are avoiding anyone who might have a cold or flu.

Basically, it is healthy, rewarding, perfectly comfortable and indeed more pleasant than the alternatives. Do not let the season put you off.

Provided you are wearing decent protection, a warm top, nice gloves and reflective gear, we guarantee that you will have a more pleasant journey compared to if you use the train or bus.

Give it a go.

Tips for SAFE CYCLING when on the road

Friday, October 9th, 2009

The following top tips have been brought to you courtesy of the London Cycling Campaign:

  1. Be aware of lorries beside, behind and in front of you
  2. Stay alert – even if you think you are out of anybody’s way
  3. Watch your position on the road
  4. Wait ahead of traffic lights
  5. Take care in bus lanes – they can still be dangerous
  6. Make sure you are safe and seen
  7. Make eye contact with other people around you – let them know you are there
  8. Ride with confidence. Confidence in your own ability is important

Prepare yourself for Autumn/Winter cycling – BE VISIBLE & BE SAFE

Tuesday, September 29th, 2009

As the days start to get shorter and your journey to work darker, we strongly recommend that you invest just a small amount in making sure you remain visible to those around you.

We currently sell two very simple and affordable items, which in our opinion are vital for autumn and winter cycling:

1) BRIGHT REFLECTIVE BELT - £18.99

2) REFLECTIVE TROUSER CLIPS - £3.99

All it takes is a glimpse of yellow out of the corner of a driver’s eye, for him to spot you and for you to be safe.

Capital Cycles – helping you cycle to work

Tuesday, September 22nd, 2009

Once again, London is embracing the spirit of cycling and at Capital Cycles we are helping. We have made a small number of crucial and valuable changes to our Dutch style bicycles, which means that they are now even more suitable for commuting with, taking to the shops or even just larking about on at the week end:

  • Puncture resistant tyres with tread designed for road and track use
  • Our rear carry racks are made from a strong hi-tensile steel and are fixed to the bicycle frame in 6 places, making it rugged and ideal for heavy duty shopping
  • Improved hubs and an upgraded bottom bracket means that the bike is now even lower maintenance and will run for years before it even needs oiling

**CYCLE FRIDAY – where it is and how it works**

Friday, August 14th, 2009

For those of us who want to get into cycling to work, help is here.

From 6 different points on the outskirts of central London, London Cycling Campaign stewards will be setting off, guiding anybody who chooses to follow, into the heart of the Capital.

Those 6 points are:
Brixton – Russell Sq 8.00 Outside KFC, Corner of Brixton Road and Coldharbour Lane, Brixton
Finsbury Park – City (St Pauls) 8.00 Finsbury Park Gate, Finsbury Park, Seven Sisters Road, Finsbury Park
Mile End – City (St Pauls) 8.00 Under the Green Bridge near Mile End station, Mile End Road, Mile End
Ravenscourt – Trafalgar sq 8.00 Outside Ravenscourt Park Tube- Ravenscourt Place, Ravenscourt Park
Swiss cottage – Holborn 8.00 Outside Theatre, Eton Avenue at junction with Swiss Cottage Gyratory, Swiss Cottage
Greenwich – City (St Pauls) 8.00 Cutty Sark Gardens, King William Walk, Greenwich

Cycling is a FASTER, CHEAPER and HEALTHIER alternative to any other form of short distance commuting. For example, to cycle at a leisurely pace from Wandsworth to the centre of Mayfair is a 45 minute ride – with stops! Our bicycles are designed for leisurely commuters – check our bikes out here.

As Mayor Boris Johnson said: “Cycle Fridays are a simple way of giving commuters the confidence to get cycling. I’m sure that when they see how much of a healthy and convenient experience it can be, they will be hooked.”

Cycle Friday will be operating every Friday until the 2nd October.

AVOID SWINE FLU – read this

Friday, July 24th, 2009

It seems fairly obvious really, doesn’t it. If you keep away from the places where large crowds of people gather and stand side by side, then you will also be keeping away from germs and viruses.

One sneeze on the Underground could splatter 15 people. If 4 different people sneeze then that’s the entire carriage.

*Chic Cycling – why traditional style bicycles are better in the heat*

Thursday, July 2nd, 2009

In this heat, the way your ride makes all the difference – as The Daily Mail explains:

‘Sit Up and Beg bicycles’ offer a relaxed riding position, with swept back handlebars and a riding style that means you can wear your loose, comfortable everyday clothes – NO lycra necessary!!!

Bicycles such as the Dawes Graduate are lovely, but they are quite heavy and they are very expensive.  At Capital Cycles, we offer a lighter, more affordable alternative – the Modern Dutch Style Ladies Hybrid Bicycle - £179.95
Then, if you want to kit it out with tan extras and front & rear wicker baskets, we can do all that for just £99.95 – see our complete tan and wicker accessory set here.
