Last night, Freddie Bourne (founder and MD of Capital Cycles) had the honour of speaking to 100 people at the Institute of Directors, some of whom being the most important people in today’s financial world.

While the other two speakers spoke about money and credit, Freddie talked about the value and importance of company ethics and value, and in doing so it cemented for him what Capital Cycles is about – providing a strong, honest, genuine and affordable service directly to the public. From listening to the other 2 speakers around him, he also affirmed the crucial importance of customer service. It seems that anyone who owns a young, small business and is surviving this recession, must believe that they are doing something right. Well, the feeling is even better when the outside world agrees.

I have been asked to make a speech at the Institute of Directors this May, explaining what i do and how i have got here. Capital Cycles is approaching its 1 year anniversary and in that time I have sold 800 bicycles, made a lot of customers very happy and SO FAR i have been able to manage the impact of our dessimated currency and the unwillingness of people to part with it.

But when i think about it, so I should. Buried into the very ethos of my little business is the absolute determination to make cycling affordable. I sell beautifully made, attractive bikes for a very low profit and the way I see it, with the financial and health benefits of the product in question and the keen pricing I stand by, I hope to survive this mess.

I do have one worry though – I don’t like speaking and the Director General of the Institute of Directors is going to be there!
